A growing list of names and terms used in the Pierre Jnr and Bumbly universe. WARNING: may contain clues to events within the books – so read first.


Glossary of Terms

Adjudicators Ministry - A group that facilitates discussion and conflict resolution. A key part of maintaining the World Union.

Annihilators - Any armed robot with killing capabilities, that follows pre-programmed target acquisition algorithms. Or in other words: programmable killing machines that will hunt like a pack of hounds

Anti Psi League (APL) - leader is Nigel Westgate, who was formerly involved with the Sapien Brethren and Minors’ Rights

bender - a psi who has telekinesis.

Citizen - a registered and legit person. Capitalised. Children can become a Citizen at any age. Non-participation – non-citizenship – is allowed.

cone - a Services vehicle; two-seater

Criticality - a card game; good for playing when ‘in the trenches’; can play with an infinite deck

Cybermesh - mesh bar and hangout in east Yantz

Dark Age - First; Second Dark Age

Digitalis - or homo digitalis; the hypothetical digital manifestation of human consciousness. Many have tried and many have failed, including Shen Li 

Digital Rights of Humankind - the principle document of the Weave which outlines the responsibilities and rights of all people

dymo-gyms - energeneration machines

Faces - 'Faces' is the word used for an artwork that reacts to data stimuli. Faces can be anything, not just a human face, such as an abstract kinetic sculpture to a light show of coloured panels uniquely interpreting the innumerable ways the Weave can be calculated, filtered and measured. It is common for many public areas to feature an artwork of this sort to indicate the group subconscious, much like a town hall bears a clock.

Faraday-V Cage - like a Faraday cage but better. Creates an electromagnetic and atmospheric barrier for isolating and testing

FutureFuture Club - a much esteemed group of rarefied intellectuals that hold lectures on hypothetical world problems of the far far future

ganzfeld suits - a full body suit and helmet worn to reduce external input from the body's senses. A wearable sensory deprivation tank, that helps people immerse more deeply into the Weave

Glossary - an alphabetical list of words relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations

Kronos - the name given to the phenomena that first manifested in Busan. Other names include 'the black beast' or 'the beast of Busan'Lang, Gretel - companion of Abercrombie Pinter. They met in rejuv. In her first life she was a minor performer.

Lingua Pax - a group studying and deconstructing languages to identify word-concepts or lexemes that might potentially negatively impact the human mind

marauder unit - armoured Serviceman

mesh - genetically modified cannabis, comes in many strains midlands – a large area of the north american continent that didn’t have the economic resources to protect itself from the extreme weather. Mostly a wasteland now.

MU - see marauder unit

needle - an apartment building with straight pillar and olive-shaped top section; Ryu’s needle is 5,000 ft or more tall

Primacy/Primacy council - usually the top 0.000001 per cent of the civic hierarchy

psi - a person with psionic powers

psionic - mental powers or a person with mental powers abbr: psi/s; world has known of the existence of psionic powers for 90 years; psi resistants; psi rebellion

Scorpion - or 'the Scorpion' was the nickname bestowed upon Captain Pinter for his single-strike approach to warfare

Serviceman, Servicemen - a gender neutral term [can it be gender neutral if it says man and men] for someone working in the Services. Also a regulation breakfast of protein cakes and rehydrated beans.

Services - is a word used synecdochically to describe the all encompassing administration of the world, the people in it, the belief system that comes with it and anything that is the property of the Services. Can be used with ‘the’ or without depending on the mood and intention of the speaker. Services was only just getting organised 40 years ago; WU didn’t totally span the globe.

servitors - robots but with the implication they have limited function 

siphon - something that sucks

squib - a flying vehicle. Squib are for short-distances of about a thousand kilometres. For longer trips people would more likely jet, or squib in a series of hops. Some squibs are transport squibs that can hold around 20 armoured Servicemen.

strat-matrix - strategy matrix

stream - each individual’s stream logs their activity on the Weave

sylus - similar to a symbiot; free-roaming and self-powered; checks things

Symbiot - a nearly-animal computer that lives in harmony with the wearer’s body. abbr: symb, bot

tapper - a psi with telepathy

tapping - using telepathy to read someone’s mind

teledistortion - it's like teleportation that doesn't work. It does move molecules from one place to another, but has no control of where they are moved to. Earliest uses for the technology was during the second Dark Age as home-made weapons of mass distruction

ten squad - a marauder team

Tom and Lily's orphanage - a group home run by Tom and Lily Patch. Home to Zach Frost, Bronwyn Zucker and about ten other kids.

the Primacy - is the World Union council; people with 0.0001% + of approval via the Will of the people are the council; leader of the council is Prime

Weave - the global internet of the future, not quite at parity yet, that comes in a later book.

weaver - is much like a coder of today but more so, they are constantly plugged into the weave and use it for data-mining and interacting. They can detect a psi through the weave by using anomalies, breaches, greys, patches, black holes … direct detection.

Will, the - the Will of the people; world voting system; the Will can be a voting bloc or a series of individuals. There is an active will and a passive will.

World Union - 1) the global governing body; 2) the global state of all member Citizens

WU - see World UnionYeon Rhee, Doctor - the chief scientist in charge of the psionic development program and it’s facility. Experiments were stopped 8 years ago.

Abercrombie Pinter, Colonel - a retired Serviceman assigned as Services liaison to Peter Lazarus and his team; old; half-wired; large moustache of white and ginger; large eyebrows; blue eyes

Angelo, Max - close advisor and old flame of Charlotte Betts

Applebent, Roger - a mid-level civic advisor; a guest on ‘The Corner’

Betts, Charlotte - Representative for psi tolerance and Citizenship Rights. Daughter of socialite Ellizabeth Betts.

Betts, Ellizabeth - Influential Citizen for Civilisation. Turned one hundred years old in 2160CE before entering rejuvenation.

Campsey, James (Lieutenant) - managing the operations in Busan but is allied to General Zim, seems like a bit of a tool

Cawthorne, Risom - young psi agent; tapper and bender both, but mostly a bender

Crozier, Quintan (Airman) - pilot of the squib taking Pinter to Busan. 33 yrs old. Pinter seconders him to be his personal aide

Diaz, Deshiel (Desh) - friend of Ben Harvey; low-level engineer, works maintenance for Frisco precinct; a bender/telekinetic; few years younger than Ben; bristly-faced, swarthy

Dungeon - the handle for a pretty vicious hakka, she's like a seductress crossed with a Tasmanian Devil

Eurosh - deceased husband of Mali. (Manifestations)

Frost, Zach - lives in Tom and Lily’s orphanage in West; 13 years old; learns mathematics, crypto and languages and monitored by Miles Lizney.

Garry - lives in Tom and Lily’s orphanage

Gella, Prue - host of 'The Corner', a popular segment on the Weave

Gerty - lives in Tom and Lily’s orphanage

Gomez - this kid who lives in Mexica with his dad and his sick mother. They live off the gargantuan scrap mountains accumalated

Gregg, Lucius -  a guest on the Corner; youngest member of the FutureFuture Club rejuvenation centre; proponent of the Laws of Diversity and many other crowd-science projects

Harvey, Ben - a kinetic in West that flees with his family to the Cape

Harvey, Freya - a mini-mogul in West, wife of Ben, mother of two, weak telepath

Harvey, Bobby - son of Freya and Ben, telepath

Harvey, Molly - daughter of Freya and Ben, emerging kinetic

Jenks - lives in Tom and Lily’s orphanage

Jessop - had a dog name Poog

Kastonovich, Mary - mother of Pierre Junior. A registered psi now kept on the islands. Formerly a dancer. (The Hunt for Pierre Jnr)

Kay, Morritz - a big name in the world of personal technology, Kay leads a huge worldwide team who create wearable computing in the form of clothing, jewellery and other accessories; for those Citizens who don't want to wear a symbiot

Lizney, Miles - a minor mentor, tutors a bunch of kids in West. Old guy, some kind of chronic medical condition

Li, Shen - Shen Li, inventor of symbiotic materials, was involved in the Terminus, spent his later years as a hermit in a deep shaft below Busan. Was briefly a mentor for Geof Ozenbach

La Gréle, Sevigny - psi fugitive, rumoured to be the leader of a psi underground movement

Mali - widow, wife of the late Eurosh; friends with artist and face-artist Morgan. (Manifestations)

Morgan -  Facemaker in Nijmegen, Europe. (Manifestations)

Oriolo, Janette - anti-psi lobbyist

Ortega, Milawi - sangoma (shaman), thinker, one of the founders of the World Union. Known for his seminal text ''What We Can See'

Ozenbach, Geof - the weaver initially assigned to the Pierre Jnr taskforce. He is bred; an incubator baby – ‘Born to be better, born to do good’; brought up in Yellowstone; Science was his mother and Services was his father; the zygote that he was would have been generations beyond the original sperm and egg; went to a Weaver ranch for his training; since age of 15 had been running assignments for ServicesPDP/Psionic Development Program or Project - have known of existence of psionic powers for 90 years.

Peter/Pete Lazarus - 35 year-old telepathic fugitive. Volunteers himself to help Services find Pierre Jnr

Pierre Jnr - Pierre Sandro Junior is a child born of a psionic enhancement facility with seemingly unlimited powers. Father, Pierre Senior; mother Mary Kastonovich.

Pierre Snr - Pierre Sandro Senior, father of Pierre Jnr, was also part of the program. Sullivan was his male partner at time of Pierre Jnr’s birth.

Rush, Quaid - trend commentator, has his own studio and runs panel discussions

Schnell, Ramona - patron of the animal underclasses; has augmented hands of elongated four-knuckled blue claws

Shelley, Egon - one of the foremost scientists and technologists in the World Union. Three campuses operate under his leadership

Solomons, Gina - Gina Solomons – Citizen of Busan

Tadler - young telepath who is restricted to the psi-islands

Tamsin Grey - a powerful psi who works for the Services tracking down and capturing unregistered psis. Around 30 years old; dark hair; black eyes

Watson, Amy - Charlotte Betts’s assistant

Westgate, Nigel - president of the Anti-Psi League

Zim, Zwybyck (General) - war veteran and founder of the World Union. Maintains a permanent position in the Primacy

Zucker, Bronwyn - or 'Bron' for short. Lives in Tom and Lily’s orphanage
